Reception

Reception: Story telling – Billy Goats Gruff

Ever wondered who was trip trapping over the bridge? The children found out that it was the Three Billy Goat Gruffs. We listened to the story, acted it out and drew a story map to go with the story. We explored the language used in the story and even had a great time building bridges outside. They had a go at trip trapping over the bridges they made, just like the Little Billy Goat Gruff, Medium sized Billy Goat Gruff and the Big Billy Goat Gruff. In the classroom, the children had opportunities to act out the story using miniature figures in the trays on the table. Overall, the children had a brilliant time learning about the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and using the story language in their everyday learning this week.

Year 1

This week in Year 1, the children have really enjoyed the start of our topic All Aboard. They had lots of knowledge about trains to share. We have been comparing old steam trains to modern electric trains, looking at the differences in looks and how they are powered.

In Maths, the children have been using dienes to represent numbers and to support with their addition number sentences. We have been using the physical dienes and children have learnt to draw the dienes with lines and dots to show their working pictorially.

Year 2

This week, in Year 2, we have begun work on our topic on Australia in Writing and Art.  In Writing, we have been writing pages for a travel brochure all about the city of Sydney, so the reader can decide what they would like to go and see.  They have focused on describing the amazing human features they could enjoy (from their Geography lessons), such as the Sydney harbour bridge.  Later on they will describe the physical features found there.  In Art, they looked at and discussed Aboriginal artwork and the different symbols that were used to pass on messages and tell stories.  They then used this as inspiration for creating their own beautiful picture.

Year 3

In Reading, Year 3 are enjoying reading a new text - Yours Sincerely Giraffe written by Megumi Iwasa. They have been applying different reading skills as they journey through this book, such as - inference, prediction and clarifying.

In Writing, Year 3 have been learning about the story of Remus and Romulus. They have been sequencing the story in order to support their big write up using time adverbials. This story also links to their new history topic this term on the Romans.

Year 4

This week, pupils from Year 4 learned about Harriet Tubman's life in both History and Writing lessons. During our History immersion, we learned of how she grew up as an enslaved person in America, but she was courageous and resolute in her fight for freedom. After escaping to the North, she was involved in the ‘Underground Railway Road’ that helped others to gain freedom. This bravery infuriated many Americans, landing her on the 'Wanted Women' in 1856. Despite this, she continued to free enslaved people in the southern states with the exact number remaining uncertain. She endangered her life on each journey. Her last mission occurred in 1860.

At the end of the lesson, children created a Top Trumps card listing and rating some of Harriet Tubman’s key skills and characteristics that enabled her to free enslaved people from America.

In PSHE, the pupils reflected about having 'Dreams and Goals' for the future. Thinking about their personal hopes and dreams for the future, pupils were asked to consider the attributes and characteristics required to make them a reality. Year 4 students were introduced to paralympic champion Ade Adepitan, who explained how he lost use of his legs due to childhood polio but wanted to become an athlete after becoming enamoured with the Olympic Games as a boy.

Year 5

This week, Year 5 have been learning about Henry VIII’s split from the Catholic Church and the subsequent dissolution of the monasteries. This was brought about by his desire to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn. In writing we have been writing newspaper reports about the Battle of Bosworth which ended the War of the Roses and saw Henry Tudor put on the throne as King. In Science, we are continuing our learning about the planets in our solar system. We learnt about the different orbits of each planet in our solar system and how long each planet's year is in relation to an earth year or day.

Year 6

New Topic: Race to the Pole

Year 6 have started their new History topic this week: Race to the Pole. During this topic, we focus on two main men, Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackelton. We have learnt about these two very different men and what influenced them to race to the South Pole. After learning about their conflicting personalities, we created a cinquain for each man. We also discussed whether we preferred one to the other and gave our reasons why. Later in the topic, we will create new cinquains to describe these men after learning more about them, to see if our judgements still hold true.
