George Spicer Newsletter - 13th October 2023

  • Absences - must be reported in writing or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with the child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.
  • Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.
  • Appointments - you must provide an appointment card / letter for your child’s absence to be classed as medical, otherwise it will be marked as an unauthorised absence.  Please note we expect your child to attend school either side of their appointment where possible.
  • Late Collection - If you are running late please advise the office as soon as possible.  If you have another person collecting your child, you must call/email the office as early as possible so that we can inform their class teacher.  If your child isn't picked up by 3.30pm at Sketty Road and 3.45pm at Kimberley Gardens, they will be signed in to after-school club at a charge of £15 per child.
  • Flu Vaccinations - KG site-Thursday 2nd November & SR site-Thursday 9th November.  For more information please click the link - Flu Vaccine Info.  To complete a consent form for a yes OR a no consent, please follow the link -  Flu Consent Form. Your child’s school code is: ENF101993

Reception

This week in Reception we have been learning letter sounds following The Essential Letters and Sounds scheme. We have been learning how to tune in and listen to sounds in spoken words and segment the sounds into smaller chunks! We then practiced blending the sounds together to say the word. For example, S-I-T....the word is sit! We used our robot arms to help us segment the sounds as it helped us to remember all the phonemes.

We have been busy learning lots of new phonemes! A phoneme is a single letter sound. You will be able to hear the phonemes we have been learning as our home reading books match the sounds we have been learning in class.

We later practiced letter formation and recalling the sounds in our ELS books. This gave us the opportunity to apply the phonetic skills we have learnt so far! I wonder if you can spot the phonemes we have been learning this week in your home reading books?

Year 1

Last week, Year 1 welcomed parents to attend a phonics workshop. The children enjoyed playing a range of phonics games and spending time with their adults whilst learning.

We were thrilled to see so many parents engaged in their child's learning and thank you all for your continuous support.

‘It was wonderful as always to watch the children so engaged and visibly enjoying their learning.’

‘The children were so excited for us to come and see their learning.’

‘Very well presented. Clear and easy to understand.’

‘We very much enjoyed the workshop.  My child loved the variety of the activities provided.’

‘The children were very engaged in several different activities.  Very clear and concise.’

Year 2

This week Year 2 visited Capel a manor as part of their ‘Habitats’ topic. They saw lots of animals and were learning all about how their habitats provided for them. The pupils behaved very well and thoroughly enjoyed the day. A big thanks to all parents who gave up their time to support the children.

Year 3

In Year 3, the children are enjoying reading - ‘Cliffhanger’ written by Jacqueline Wilson. This has led to many of the children wanting to read more books written by this famous children’s author. They have been working on their inference and summarising skills. Feel free to test your child on the summary of a book they have read at home or at school.

Year 4

As part of our Art topic this term, the children sketched a Payara fish that we had learnt about in our Writing lessons. They were able to use a variety of shading techniques as part of their sketch, by creating tone and ensuring that they varied their techniques from light to dark where they could. This initial sketch will help them when creating their final Payara Fish using clay!

Year 5

This week Year 5 have finished their writing linked to the book Dracula. In this part of the story Dracula makes his way to Whitby in the bowels of a ship. A ferocious storm brings the ghostly ship ashore and is manned by a lone, dead man tied to the helm of the ship. The children loved writing descriptive writing of the storm and the malicious dog that escaped from the ship, terrifying the villagers. We role-played a news story of the events at Whitby to bring our writing alive.

In Art, we have made our final version of our clay gargoyles. We used all the techniques we have been learning - slip, blending, scoring, moulding and shaping to bring our gargoyles to life. We are really pleased with the results.

Year 6

Thank you so much to all the parents who managed to take part in our maths workshops this week. It was great to see the children engaged with you and their learning. Hopefully it has given you all an insight into which strategies the children are using. The children very much enjoyed sharing their knowledge with you.  Half of the year group went to Ellenborogh Table Tennis Club with Mr Spong to learn how to play the game as part of our PE curriculum.  ,The children picked up the new skills really quickly.  The other half will go after the holiday.

Harvest Donations

Thank you for all of your donations for the Harvest Food Festival this week. We have donated to the North London Foodbank.

Sports Update

Well done to the Netball team who started their league campaign this week. Even though we were unfortunate to win our first two games, the way the team played was admirable. Everyone showed incredible resilience, positivity and motivation - you should be very proud!

Last Friday we took 2 teams to Forty Hall for the Enfield Primary School's Cross Country event.  All the boys and girls who took part tried their best and kept running until the very end.
