George Spicer Newsletter - 6th October 2023

  • Communication with school - a reminder that the main contact with the school is via the offices: email:  office@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk Telephone: 020 8363 1406
  • Communication with Breakfast and After School club - Please email: basc@georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk
  • Contact details - please ensure that your contact phone numbers and addresses are up-to-date
  • Absences - must be reported in writing or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with the child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.
  • Attendance - as a school we do not authorise absence for family holidays during the school term.   Parents / Carers who choose to take their child out of school for holidays should be aware that their child’s absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and a penalty notice will be issued.  A Penalty Notice costs £60 per parent and per child, if payment is made within 21 days. £120 if paid after 21 days, but within 28 days.
  • Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.
  • Appointments - you must provide an appointment card / letter for your child’s absence to be classed as medical, otherwise it will be marked as an unauthorised absence.  Please note we expect your child to attend school either side of their appointment where possible.
  • Late Collection - If you are running late please advise the office as soon as possible.  If you have another person collecting your child, you must call/email the office as early as possible so that we can inform their class teacher.  If your child isn't picked up by 3.30pm at Sketty Road and 3.45pm at Kimberley Gardens, they will be signed in to after-school club at a charge of £15 per child.
  • Harvest Festival - Please could you bring in any donations for our Harvest Assembly on the morning of Monday 9th October.  We will be donating to the North London Foodbank.
  • Flu Vaccinations - KG site-Thursday 2nd November & SR site-Thursday 9th November.  For more information please click the link - Flu Vaccine Info.  To complete a consent form for a yes OR a no consent, please follow the link -  Flu Consent Form. Your child’s school code is: ENF101993

Happy Black History Month!

October is a time when we can reflect on the history, achievements and contributions of Black people in the UK. At George Spicer, we will be celebrating Black History Month across the school. All year groups will be taking time to study and reflect upon different aspects of Black British history, and we will be celebrating individuals who have made a positive impact upon our country. This year the theme is ‘Saluting our Sisters’, so we will be focusing on the contributions and achievements of Black British women.  We will be taking part in a wide range of activities, including having a range of speakers into the school to share experiences and to talk about their jobs.

This year and beyond, we will be making a real effort as a school to ensure that we provide a diverse and rich curriculum which reflects and celebrates the community within which we teach. If you would like to find out more about Black History Month events coming up this month in our borough, or in London and the surrounding areas, then you can visit the Black History Month website.

Quote of the week

"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." Harriet Tubman.

Overall school = 95.1% Lates = 93

Best attendance: 1st Odysseus 99.46% 2nd Oak 99.17 & 3rd Achilles 98.92%

Reception

Reception read an interesting book this week called, 'Circles All Around Us'. It describes the relationships and connections we have with all the special people in our lives and how we can strive to make new connections in the future. The character in the book starts by drawing a circle around themselves, as they are the most special person, and then they draw more circles so their 'love and care' can ripple out to more people, such as family, friends, teachers and classmates.

We had fun demonstrating this in class using string and drawing equipment to create our circles. The children closed their eyes and thought very hard about who was special to them and who would be in their circles. We then drew our favourite people in the circles in our English books. Who would be in your circles of love and friendship?

Year 1

This week Year 1 were focusing on their senses. The children went on an autumnal walk and collected a range of natural resources whilst thinking about what they could see, hear, smell and touch. They then wrote a poem about their walk. I think it is clear, Year 1 is full of poets!

'I can see apples falling off the trees as well as orange and pink leaves.

The leaves are crunchy beneath my feet.

With the bright sun I feel the heat.'

Year 2

This week, as part of our PSHE sessions, Year 2 have been discussing responsibilities and what we can do to show we are being responsible and following the 4 Bes (our school rules).  In Maths, we have been learning how to order numbers to 100 and compare using the symbols > (greater than) < (less than) and = (equals).

Year 3

In Year 3, we have been learning how to write speech dialogue and drew upon inspiration from the Turkish folk tale - ‘Battle of the Wits’.

In Art, we have been working hard to create our own abstract art piece just like the famous Turkish artist - Princess Fahrelnissa Zeid.

We also continued working on our maths knowledge of 100 less or more of a given number.

Year 4

In Year 4 this week, we have been exploring the continent South America, focusing on Brazil. In Geography, we drew a map of Brazil and a key to identify important cities, the Amazon River and airports. We were able to notice that airports were close to important cities and have started looking at why certain cities are more populated than others.

Year 5

This week in Year 5, we have been learning more about Romania and the geographical features of the country. We have been learning about the topographical features, making a map and drawing a key. We also marked on the map, some of the main cities, rivers and land features in Romania, as well as the neighbouring countries and sea.

In PSHE, we have been agony aunts by helping other (fictional) children with their problems. The children used the four Bes and the UNCRC to help advise these children on what to do best in different circumstances. Children gave really thoughtful, sensitive and empathetic responses and all the teachers were very proud of the kindness they showed.

Year 6

Year 6 have been perfecting their sketching techniques this week, paying careful attention to shading and tone.  They have focussed particularly on drawing skulls ready to begin their final piece based on Frida Khalo's artwork.

Many of the children have identified links with our writing on Macbeth.

In addition, we have furthered our understanding of Macbeth during National Poetry Day. We have created Haikus and Cinquains based on the scene where Macbeth sees the dagger floating in front of him.

Football

Huge congratulations to the boys' football team who have had an incredible start to the season.

We played our first set of matches in the league against Lavender, St Michael's, and St John's, winning all three of our games, 3-2, 2-0 and 4-2 respectively.

The team played brilliantly together and this contributed to some superb goals from Christopher, Aaron and Rio.

It's a fantastic start, but we still have a long way to go!  Every single contribution helps, so if you think you can support us in any way then we would love to hear from you!  Even if it's just joining our next meeting to contribute ideas, we're a small team that could use more hands!   Please email friendsofgeorgespicerpta@gmail.com if you would like to help and support our charity.

Until next week...
