George Spicer Newsletter - 22nd September 2023

• Contact details - please ensure that your contact phone numbers and addresses are up-to-date 
• Absences - must be reported in writing or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.  
• Attendance - as a school we do not authorise absence for family holidays during the school term.   Parents / Carers who choose to take their child out of school for holidays should be aware that their child’s absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and a penalty notice will be issued.  A Penalty Notice costs £60 per parent and per child, if payment is made within 21 days. £120 if paid after the 21 days but within 28 days.
• Lateness - The number of children arriving late in the mornings is high. Unfortunately, it is the same children repeatedly.  Gates close at 9am and learning starts promptly at this time.  If your child is 5 minutes late every day, this equates to nearly 3 whole days of missed learning, plus it’s disruptive for other children.  Please try to drop your child/children at least 5/10 minutes early to avoid this continuous lateness.  
• Appointments - you must provide an appointment card / letter for your child’s absence to be classed as medical, otherwise it will be marked as an unauthorised absence.  Please note we expect your child to attend school either side of their appointment where possible.
• ParentPay – ‘we are a cashless school’ - every child at the school has a ParentPay account (If you are new to George Spicer, a login will be issued shortly). If your child attends Breakfast and After School Club please ensure that your account is paid in advance and up-to-date. 
• Welfare Donations - Please can we have donations of wipes, tissues and plasters for our welfare.
• Be prepared - please make sure your child/ren is prepared for school and is sent in with everything they need, e.g. water bottle/lunch.

Our Value 

This week’s assemblies have continued on our half-termly value of Responsibility.  We have talked about who we are responsible to and who we are responsible for and explored the theme of having our own choices being empowering – a superpower in fact.  My Challenge for the year is ‘Be the best You, you can be’ and we talked about making good choices or bad choices but owning our choices.  Sketty children have been asked to try to take on extra responsibilities in either the classroom or at home so maybe think about some that they could do outside of school.

Reception

This week in Reception, we have been learning about the 4Be's that we need to follow to support positive behaviour at George Spicer. We learned how to 'Be safe', 'Be sensible', 'Be Kind' and 'Be respectful' at school. We talked about how to keep safe on the climbing frame and how to sit sensibly on the carpet. N explained, "We need to share all the toys and play nicely with our friends." 

The children painted their hands in the colour of their class and printed them to create bees and flowers for our class charters. All the adults are looking carefully for children who are following the 4Be's so they can move up to bronze, silver or even gold on the behaviour ladder!

Year 1

Year 1 have continued to build their knowledge and understanding of 3D shapes this week. The children enjoyed building and making rockets out of 3D and 2D shapes. This links it to our writing of 'What Ever Next' as baby bear goes to the moon in a rocket ship. Once the children had made their rocket ship, they then labelled the shapes they could see. 

Year 2

This week Year 2 have continued to learn about shapes and have used them to make repeated and symmetrical patterns. They also moved onto describing movements, using left, right, up, down, forwards and backwards to move items on a grid.  In writing they have learnt more about ‘The Wind in the Willows’ and wrote some lovely setting descriptions based on it.

Year 3 

This week Year 3 have continued to focus on geometry as part of their Maths sessions. They  have learnt what parallel and perpendicular lines are, and how to draw them. In Writing, they have learnt all about grey wolves in order to write a detailed non- chronological report.  For PSHE, the pupils have been learning about their rights and responsibilities. Their activity was to draw their ideas for a dream or nightmare school and why we want the best school possible.

Year 5 

This week year 5 have continued writing their Dracula narratives. The tension in the story is building up as Jonathan Harker embarks on his journey to Dracula’s castle through the dead of night. The children did some lovely writing about the treacherous journey which included some exciting vocabulary to build a mood of suspense and horror.

In Geography we have also been learning about Romania the country that the Dracula story is set. We have learned some of the geographical terms and features in Romania. Watch this space for our Romania maps next week!

In Religion and World Views we are continuing with our learning about ‘What Jesus Would Do’ this week focussing on forgiveness.

Year 6 

Year 6 have continued to work really hard this term and have settled into their new morning groups. The year 6 team can see a definite increase in focus and diligence as we keep on with our journey to the SATs in May. Mr Rasheed has been excited to get to teach his new class for both reading and maths and has enjoyed getting to know the year group.
