Rainbow Class

In Rainbow Class we have been making “Healthy Banana Muffins,” as we had some very ripe bananas left over that no one wanted to eat. So one of the children suggested that we could make cupcakes or muffins with them. We looked at some recipes and decided that the muffin recipe would be good one to make. This is an activity that incorporates listening skills to follow the instructions and to listen to each other. Using our gross motor skills to mix, mash and pour ingredients into the bowl while our fine motor skills came into action when adding smaller amounts of ingredients to the mixture and filling the muffin cases. As a team we worked together on our phonics knowledge to read  the list of ingredients and to follow the steps in the recipe. Recognising that some of the ingredients in the recipe needed to be measured out carefully using the weighing scales. This  brought in our mathematical skills in reading the numbers on the recipe and thinking about if we needed to add more or less to get the correct amount. The children enjoyed making these and would like to try a different variety of muffin maybe a savoury one next time.

Reception Class

We have been getting truly immersed into our dinosaur topic this week! Our writing this week has been based on the story '10 Terrible Dinosaurs', we have been writing stories to describe what dinosaurs could be doing! Naiyah-Rose said '8 dinosaurs standing in a line but one fell down!' Adam said '4 dinosaurs jumping but one went too high!'.

In our continuous provision, we have been using the small world area to create our own dinosaur stories and think about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Ollie said 'The T-Rex is a carnivore, it eats other dinosaurs. Roar!'. For our creative activities, we have been learning about fossils. We learnt that fossils are bones which have hardened over many years; archaeologists and palaeontologists dig them up to find out more about the past. We have been creating our own dinosaur skeletons using pasta.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 Maths we are learning about position and direction.  We practised with objects and used prepositions such as above, next to, below, under and on top of to help develop our positional language. We also explored travelling in different directions, such as clockwise and anti-clockwise. We have also been learning our left and right - which has included some dancing of the cha cha slide to help us remember and practise!

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have continued to learn about Food Chains as part of our Science lessons. The pupils constructed their own using the arrows to show the direction the energy passes, and using the words producer and consumer to identify the role of the plants and animals. They also continued to learn about differences and how theses are celebrated during Pride week. The children collaborated within their class to recreate the flag using everyone’s handprint. In Writing, we continued to learn about extinct animals. The pupils enjoyed learning about Woolly Mammoths and then went on to write some lovely non-chronological reports.

Year 3

This week in Art, Year 3 have been getting creative and learning how to create their own Venus fly trap.

In our Science lessons we have already looked at the features of the Venus fly trap and how it attracts its prey. After watching a tutorial and the teacher demonstrating, the children were excited to get to use paper-mâché and newspaper strips to cover their balloons, before allowing them to dry.

We are now in the process of putting on another layer of paper, before we burst the balloons and start to cut and draw the design on our outer shells. We are all looking forward to seeing our painted Venus fly traps open and close!

Year 4

This week we have been continuing our learning in Science. We have learnt about the different types of teeth and their roles in helping us break down food. We looked at our teeth in a mirror and used our tongues to feel the different teeth we have. The incisors felt sharp and the molars were rough. These qualities help the teeth to do their jobs efficiently. We also looked at the different parts and layers of a tooth (crown and root) and discussed what can cause and prevent tooth decay. We used our knowledge to begin writing an information text.

Year 5

In Year 5 this week, we have continued our Frankenstein topic in English. The children have been completely immersed. This week they have written a second person narrative describing Victor Frankenstein's first encounter with his creation.  The results were incredible! Well done year 5!

Year 6

Year 6 – Geography Fieldwork

Because of Miss Ahmed’s love of bees, the Year 6 pupils investigated the importance of bees and how we can make bee-friendly areas. We visited the local wildlife garden in Bush Hill Park and made a tally of the bee-friendly plants  and structures that were already there.

Our data showed that there were a few plants and structures that were good for bees, so we made a little plan on what we could do to improve the wildlife garden further.

Staffing Update

As the end of year approaches we will not just be saying goodbye to our Year 6s and our children who are relocating.  We will also have a number of staff moving on to other schools with promotions or for a closer and easier commute.

Sadly, we will be saying our farewells to Mrs Wellbrook, Miss Price, Mr Roberts, Miss Kinga, Miss Watson and Mrs Grover.  In addition to these teachers, some of our TAs will also be moving on to pastures new: Mr Parry, Miss Moore, Miss Yildirim and Miss Osei.

Both Mrs Tucker and Mrs Ellis will be going on maternity leave.

I am sure you will join me in wishing all these the very best for the future in their new roles.

There will obviously be a number of new teachers joining our team and I will introduce them all to you nearer to the class swaps day.

FoGs News

Wow, what an extraordinary day it was!

The George Spicer Summer Fun Day exceeded all expectations, leaving everyone smiling. With over 10 fun activities to choose from, the excitement was palpable. From thrilling games to mouth-watering treats, the event had something for everyone. The sun beamed down on a lively crowd of 700+ visitors, as the DJ's tunes filled the air.  And who could forget the crazy lady who had everyone in fits of laughter, dancing and cooling everyone down with a hose? The spirit of our school community thrived as we collectively enjoyed over 300 burgers and 500 ice pops, creating a true sense of togetherness.

Beyond the fun and festivities, the day held a greater purpose – raising funds for new climbing equipment at Sketty Road's large playground. The generosity of our school community was overwhelming, with so much money raised that our treasurer is still diligently counting every penny (but we do know it's surpassed £4,000!)

Thank you to all the Parents/Carers/Teachers that got stuck in and helped to make the day so special for everyone!  Stay tuned for next week's newsletter, where we will proudly announce the final amount achieved, made possible by all of you.

Thank you for joining us on this remarkable journey of fun, camaraderie, and giving back.
