George Spicer newsletter - 2nd December 2022

Attendance - As a school we do not authorise absence for family holidays during the school term, Parents / Carers who choose to take their child out of school for holidays should be aware that their child’s absence will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’ and a penalty notice will be issued.  A Penalty Notice costs £60 per parent and per child, if payment is made within 21 days. £120 if paid after the 21 days but within 28 days.

Punctuality - The school gates open at 8.45am for a soft start to support a calm arrival to school. All our pupils are expected to be in class for registration by 09:00 am. The school gates are then locked at this point.  Pupils need to be in school by 09:00 am for registration. If your child arrives after 09:00 am, they will receive a late mark (L). If your child arrives after 09:10 am, they will receive a 'U' code (missed session) on their registration certificate which will impact on their overall attendance percentage.

Absences - must be reported in writing by email or by phone by 9am daily. Please leave a brief message with your child's name, class and the reason for their absence.  It will be recorded as unauthorised if you do not leave a reason or say your child is 'unwell'.

Appointments - You must provide an appointment card / letter for your child’s absence to be classed as medical, otherwise it will be marked as an unauthorised absence.  Please note we expect your child to attend school either side of their appointment where possible.

Governors Report - The Governors Annual Report to Parents/Carers 2021-2022, is now available to read in the Governors’ section of the school website https://www.georgespicer.enfield.sch.uk/attachments/download.asp?file=435&type=pdf

Reception Class

In Reception, we had a very exciting start to the week! We have been learning about Frank Bailey, the fire brigade's first black firefighter. We learnt about the importance of treating everyone equally and being determined when trying to reach our goals. As part of this, a real-life fire engine drove into the school! We listened to the fire fighters tell us about their job and what to do if there was an emergency at home. We then asked them questions, Hari asked, 'How do you drive the big fire truck?' and Tamiah asked, 'What do you find most rewarding about your job?'. The fire fighters said 'We love to help people and keep them safe' and Sarah the fire fighter said 'I wanted to be a firefighter to show everyone how strong I could be'. We were very inspired by our visit and have been writing, drawing and creating firefighter work since!

Year 1

Year One were so excited this week, they received a letter from Dan the Dormouse. He was eager to find out what we do during winter as he has a long winter sleep. Dan hibernates during the winter. Do you know that Dormice sleep for 6 months? Wow! This week we are writing three letters to Dan. Letter one is about winter, letter two is about what we wear during winter to keep warm. Lastly, the third letter is about what activities we do during winter. We love making snowmen, going for walks, ice skating and drinking hot cocoa.

Here is an example of our work. We cannot wait to continue our writing.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have continued to learn about the explorers Sacagawea and Matthew Henson in our ‘Travelling the Globe’ topic. We will soon be sketching Sacajawea as part of our art lessons this half term, and in preparation we have been practising using different graded pencils to create shade and tone.

Year 3

In RE this week, Year 3 learnt that in the Christian faith, God is loving and forgiving. Christians believe that God will forgive people for what they have done wrong if they are sorry and change their ways. The children listened to the Parable of the Prodigal Son, a short story about forgiveness. The children were then given character roles and acted out the different parts of the story in their groups. This helped the children to understand how they can love and forgive others in the same way.

Year 4

During our Geography lesson this week the pupils learnt about the journey of a river. They acted out the upper, middle and lower course in the playground in teams which gave them a great understanding of the parts of a river. They came up for actions for the different aspects of the river and considered the speed of each section which they then represented through acting as a river.

When we returned to our classroom the students applied their knowledge in groups to create their own river models using playdough. Working together they sketched an outline, made a playdough river and labelled their work with key vocabulary.

Year 5

Art perspective drawings

During our Art lesson this week, Year 5 began to explore the work of David Hockney, looking at perspective in his work!

To begin, we spoke about how perspective drawings are sketched, with one-point perspectives showing how objects get smaller as they move towards the horizon line. Perspective drawings include a vanishing point, which is a point in the distance on the horizon line. Most of Hockney's paintings have one vanishing point. The children noted that in the foreground, objects are drawn larger and in the mid ground they are drawn smaller than those in the foreground. A horizon line also most be drawn, ensuring that objects drawn on this line are even smaller to show the change in distance from the viewer.

We then completed a first draft of David Hockney's inspired perspective drawing, using sketching pencils and clean curved lines. We first drew our vanishing point towards the top of the piece of paper. We then drew lines for the foreground, mid ground and a horizon line. We then added more detail, such as land sections and trees, ensuring we think about placement and size. Once we had drawn our sketch, we used pastel in the style of Hockney, choosing bright bold colours and making sure we used blue (his signature colour!)

Year 6

Hajj
We have completed our Islamic unit this half term, learning about one of the five pillars: Pilgrimage. We learnt about the importance of going on the Hajj pilgrimage and what this means to a member of the Islamic faith.

To begin with we learnt about what takes place during this pilgrimage. Learning about the different stages, we labelled a map. We focused on 7 different stages and explained why they were important and what happened at each point.

We then thought about how Pilgrimage makes a Muslim feel further connected to Allah. We explored a story of a man, who had saved money for years to go to Hajj, who gave his savings to a friend in need. From this, we learnt that being a good Muslim is as important as going on the Hajj.

To further cement our understanding of this special event, we wrote diary entries as if we had visited; noting what we saw and how it made us feel.

YR 4/5 Carol Service

We were so happy to return to Enfield Baptist Church to perform our Carols. There was beautiful singing from all the children and a really well done to our brave children who read what Christmas means to them. It was so lovely to hear about all the different things that happen for the children at Christmas. A thank you to Mandy who held the service for us, coming out of retirement especially for us!  A special thanks to our parents who helped walk us safely to the church and back but also the amazing turnout from parents to watch us sing. It was incredible. Finally a massive thank you to Miss Heley who organised it all!

We look forward to next Friday when year 3 and 6 go to St Andrew’s church in the town. We really hope to see lots of you there!
